Located around 136 kms north-west of Kolkata, Shantiniketan is an oasis of peace and tranquility that attracts weekender in hordes from Kolkata. Established by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in 1921, the vishva-Bharti University and the settlement were designed to promote Bengali culture and liberal arts. In Kolkata, you must also visit Eden Garden, where you can go on for evening stroll. The place also houses the renowned cricket ground by the same name.
Durga Puja at October/November month is the most celebrated in the city and also the best time to visit Kolkata. The population of the city increases manifold during Durga Puja and people flock to lavishly decorated Puja Pandals. Bengali Ragolla, Maacher Jhol and Kathi Kebab roll, chops and above all the Indian version of Chinese food are all cleverly concocted and served here and relished by the many gourmets in the city.
For a taste of the original European eating experience in Kolkata visit Flurys on Park Street, once considered the best bakery in Asia. For Indian food you can try NIzam’s in new market, which invented Kathi Kebab rolls. There are a number of restaurants, from the stand alone ones to those attached to star grade hotels, from cheap restaurant to expensive ones. As for mishtis – mithais or sweets these are varied in shape, size and taste and are definitely not to be missed.
